Barts Electric, a renowned national electrical construction contractor, is proud to showcase the dedication and expertise of its fourth-year apprentices. This group of talented individuals recently underwent a rigorous examination of their knowledge and skills, positioning them among the top performers in the Midwest chapter of ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors). This blog article provides an insightful look into the apprenticeship journey at Barts Electric and the upcoming Hands-On competition that highlights the practical prowess of these electricians.

Barts Electric Apprenticeship Program

Barts Electric is committed to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. The fourth-year apprentices featured in the video have successfully completed Barts Electric’s comprehensive apprenticeship curriculum. This program not only emphasizes hands-on skills but also requires apprentices to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge through a written exam.

Recognition in ABC Apprenticeship

All three apprentices excelled in the written exam, securing a place in the top percentage of the Midwest chapter of ABC. Barts Electric proudly associates itself with ABC’s apprenticeship, contributing to the growth and recognition of skilled electricians across the nation. The apprentices’ success in the written exam earned them a spot in the prestigious Hands-On competition.

Hands-On Competition

The Hands-On competition, organized by ABC, tests the practical abilities of electricians, challenging them to apply their knowledge in a real-world scenario. The Barts Electric apprentices will participate in a commercial mixed residential Hands-On service competition. This involves mounting a panel meter can with an overhead service, a branch section with four-way switches, three-way switches, receptacles, dryer plugs, washer plugs, and even a doorbell.

Judging Criteria

The apprentices will be evaluated based on various criteria, including safety practices, installation techniques, and overall quality of work. Judges will closely monitor their performance throughout the competition, ensuring that every aspect of their work meets industry standards. The competitors have a time limit of six hours to complete the assigned tasks.

National Recognition

The stakes are high as the first-place winner from the Midwest chapter will advance to the national competition. This prestigious event brings together winners from all over the United States for a grand showcase of electricians’ skills. It’s a significant achievement for these apprentices, reflecting not only their manual dexterity but also their depth of understanding and commitment to their craft.

The Importance of Knowledge and Dedication

Barts Electric emphasizes that a career in construction, especially in electrical work, requires not just physical effort but also a profound understanding of the trade. These apprentices exemplify the company’s values by dedicating time and effort not only to practical tasks but also to the theoretical aspects of their profession.

Preparation for Success

In preparation for the competition, Barts Electric is meticulous in providing its apprentices with a realistic preview of the tasks they’ll face on the competition day. This involves setting up a close imitation of the competition scenario, allowing the apprentices to familiarize themselves with the equipment and refine their skills.

Barts Electric takes pride in its commitment to excellence and the continuous development of skilled electricians. The apprentices showcased in the video exemplify the company’s dedication to nurturing talent and preparing electricians for the challenges of their profession. As Barts Electric continues to grow, the company remains open to new apprentices and experienced journeymen who share a passion for electrical work. If you’re considering a career in electrical construction, Barts Electric welcomes you to join their team and be a part of the exciting journey in shaping the future of the electrical industry.

These guys here, you guys are all fourth-year apprentices this year, and Bart’s Electric apprenticeship curriculum. All three of them had to take a written exam this year over their knowledge that they’ve learned over the past four years. The highest percentage test-takers qualify for a Hands-On competition.

All three of these guys placed within the top percentage of the Midwest chapter of ABC. So, we’re all part of the greater ABC apprenticeship. Between all the apprenticeship tools that ABC has in the Midwest, they placed in the top percentage. They qualified to compete in a Hands-On competition. First, they had to prove that they retain the knowledge, understand the code, and comprehend all the skills required to be an electrician. Now, they get to prove they can also handle the Hands-On portion.

This Friday, all three of them are going to compete against all the other people who qualified in a Hands-On portion. It’s made up of what they’re calling a commercial mixed residential Hands-On service competition. They each have to mount a panel meter can with an overhead service, a Branch section with four-way switches, three-way switches, receptacles, dryer plugs, washer plugs, doorbell, and a whole assortment of stuff. They’re going to be judged on their safety, quality, installation technique, and everything else. A bunch of people will be watching them throughout the day. They have a time limit of, I think, six hours to get it done.

Once it’s over, the judges will come over. They’ll try every single thing, turn on every switch, try every receptacle, pull on their wires, and test their breakers to ensure everything is functional. At the end of it, they’ll select a first-place winner. The first-place winner will get to go to the national competition where all the winners from all over the United States combine in one place. It changes locations from California to different places every year. It’s a significant accomplishment to get here. Many people assume that construction, in general, is just putting work in place, but these guys know that there’s a lot of knowledge that goes along with that. They have put a lot of time and dedication into learning, not just doing stuff with their hands, but using their minds.

They are proving now that they have what it takes mentally and physically to do this kind of work. It’s really cool to see people take their careers so seriously. Right now, what we’re doing is setting up a close imitation of what they’re going to see on Friday. It’s to get their minds ready and have them physically touching everything. So, they’re really prepared for Friday.
