Starting a career in the electrical trades is an exciting journey, but it often comes with a steep learning curve. At Barts Electric, a national electrical construction contractor, we believe that the best way to grow is through a combination of hands-on experience and a strong support network. Whether you are a seasoned professional or someone looking to break into the industry, understanding the day-to-day reality of the job is key to long-term success.

The Power of Problem-Solving

One of the most rewarding aspects of becoming an electrician is the opportunity to use your brain to solve complex problems. As many of our team members discover early on, you won’t always have a journeyman or master electrician standing directly over your shoulder. While you will be given a layout and clear instructions on what needs to be done, there are moments where you have to work independently to figure things out.

This independence can be challenging at first, especially when encountering specialized systems or installations you haven’t seen before. However, it is exactly this “trial by fire” that helps build the confidence and technical skills necessary for a successful future in the trade. Embracing the challenge of figuring things out on your own is what transforms an apprentice into a skilled craftsman.

A Network of Support

While independence is encouraged, no one at Barts Electric is ever truly alone. We pride ourselves on a culture of mentorship where help is always just a phone call away. Our apprentices know that if their direct supervisor is busy, there is an entire team of experienced professionals—like Chris, Brian, and others—who are always willing to step in and provide guidance.

Having a diverse group of people to turn to is a massive advantage. It ensures that if you hit a roadblock, you can get the help you need to keep the project moving safely and efficiently. This collaborative environment is what makes Barts Electric a premier destination for those serious about their electrical career.

We didn’t have a bunch of journeymen and masters out here. So, we’d have someone lay us out, let us know what to do and how to do it, and we could call them for help. But, it was just working by myself and trying to figure things out by myself was a little bit challenging at first, just because it was a lot of stuff I haven’t seen before.

It’s helped me a lot. I really enjoy just having to use my brain and trying to figure things out on myself. And I think it’s going to help me for my future a lot because Derek is the main guy that’s kind of in charge of me. So, I can call him and if he’s busy or can’t get to me right now, I can call Chris, I can call Brian and they will always be willing to help and do what they can to help.

It’s really nice just having a lot of people you can go to, not just one person. And just if you need help, you can get it pretty.
